Ca. fireman visits Laurel to tout nationwide cancer awareness tour

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - A California firefighter and cancer survivor was in the Pine Belt this week, laying the groundwork for a nationwide tour next spring to increase awareness of the impact of cancer on the nation's firefighters. Lorenzo Abundiz visited the Emergency Operations Center in Laurel Friday to talk about a cross-country mission he and other firefighters will make next May.

That trip will make stops at different fire halls to encourage early cancer screenings for firefighters.

Abundiz has been a firefighter for more than 30 years and has battled 3 different types of cancer since 1998.

"I know a lot of people get cancer, but for some reason, firefighters are coming down with rare cancers very early in their life," said Abundiz. "We want to fight that war against cancer by encouraging those early screenings and sharing our testimonial and our experience," he said.

Abundiz started the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation to help firefighters battling cancer. For more information about the organization, you can go to their website at
