HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Southern Miss baseball team begins preparations for the 2012 season with the start of fall practice this Sunday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, beginning at 1 p.m.
The Golden Eagles, which reached their ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth last spring, looks to improve on a 39-19 record from a season ago.
Third-year coach Scott Berry and his staff will use this time to evaluate the squad as the Golden Eagles look to replace five position player starters along with three starting pitchers and a closer.
"We have a lot of spots up for grabs this fall and I am looking forward to seeing our players compete for those positions," said Berry. "With that said, though, we still have a great nucleus of players returning and I am thrilled with the new players that we have been able to bring in for our team this season."
Southern Miss will play a pair of fall games including a tilt against William Carey, Sunday, Oct. 23, and then hold its annual Black and Gold Game, Sunday, Oct. 30. Game times will be announced at a later date.
Practices typically take place beginning at 2:30 p.m., each day and the squad normally has intra-squad games on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
