OAK GROVE, MS (WDAM) - Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann met with high school seniors at Petal, Hattiesburg, and Oak Grove High Wednesday afternoon for a Promote the Vote event.
As part of their leadership project a group from Leadership Pine Belt brought Hosemann in to talk to students about the importance of getting out to vote. Following Hosemann's talk to the students, those who would be 18 by November 8 were given the opportunity to register to vote.
Hosemann believes through voter education Mississippi can achieve a higher voter turn out among young people.
"What we want to do is get people in the process of going to vote. If they vote the first time, we find they will go back to vote," said Hosemann. "It's the first step in the voting booth that is the most difficult. So we get them to vote when they are 18, 19, 20, and they will continue to vote the rest of their lives."
More than 180 students from the three schools were registered to vote. Each of the students who registered received a t-shirt depicting the Promote the Vote event. Pearl River Community College donated the money for the t-shirts.
Leadership Pine Belt says they will have another Promote the Vote in the spring to register students who turn 18 later in the school year. If you would care to be a sponsor for the event call Allison Neville at 601-606-0077.
