COLLINS, MS (WDAM) - The Collins and Jackson State Veterans Homes have been awarded federal grants worth a total of $1.35 million to use for improvements to their facilities.
The Collins home will receive $924,000 and the one is Jackson will get $426,000.
In Collins, the money will be used to make the facility more energy efficient, increase the size of the space in the day room, renovate the recreation area, and create a separate smoking area within the facility.
Administrator Landa Oglesby says the improvements will make life a lot better for the residents.
"It's going to give them more space to mingle with instead of being so crowded," said Oglesby. "As well as in the smoking area. There are some residents who do not smoke and because they don't want to consume all that smoke this will be better for them."
Oglesby expects all the improvements to be completed by the end of the year.
