William Carey holds Celebration of Freedom

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - William Carey University remembered 9/11 with a Celebration of Freedom Sunday afternoon in the Smith Auditorium at the Thomas Fine Arts Center.

The ceremony honored those that sacrificed their lives for American freedom and military members, veterans, and emergency response workers.

The musical tribute featured the William Carey Choir, joined by choirs from several area churches and Hattiesburg and Laurel High Schools. The Carey Orchestra played along side the Sumrall High School Marching Band. The Color Guard Unit from Camp Shelby led of the ceremony with the presentation of the colors.

"We're a strong nation that has risen from the ashes of a terrible tragedy and it's important that the world see us grieve, but also see us rise," said Don Odom, Dean of the Winters School of Music. "That the world recognize that we are a nation of freedom and even if we disagree with each other, the way we solve our disagreements is peaceful and we hope the rest of the world will adopt that way of resolving conflict."

The Celebration of Freedom was put on the University's Winters School of Music.
