Jones first responders remember 9-11

ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) - First responders from the Jones County Sheriff's Department and volunteer fire departments gathered Sunday morning for the We Shall Never Forget ceremony to remember all who perished on 9-11.

The Jones County Fire Council and Sheriff's Departments color guards presented the colors and lowered the flag to half staff.  At 7:46 a.m. and then again at 8:03 a.m. a bell was tolled to mark the time that American flight 11 hit the south tower and United flight 175 struck the north tower.

County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna says it's really important to remember what happened that day and even in the weeks that followed.

"We became one country again, we became a flag bearing country," said McKenna. "We used the word God. People were praying to god. Today it's a different environment, a different sense. We need to get back to where we were the days and weeks after 9-11."

The names of the 415 police officers and fire personnel who perished in the disaster were read during the ceremony.
