Habitat For Humanity home recipient finally moves into her home

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg woman who lost most of her belongings and rental home during Hurricane Katrina now has a new home of her own, thanks to volunteers and the Hattiesburg-Area Habitat For Humanity.

Melissa Carpenter cut a ribbon to officially dedicate her home in the Celeste Place Subdivision Saturday morning.

"I'm overwhelmed with the response of the volunteers that came out to support me on my house dedication on today," Carpenter said.

It's the 56th home in the Hub City area built by Habitat For Humanity and the organization's volunteers.

Carpenter's home has been under construction since March of 2009. Building began during Habitat's Collegiate Challenge Program in partnership with Southern Miss.

Carpenter and other Habitat for Humanity home owners are required to put in dozens of hours of sweat equity to build their houses. They also pay off the homes with a 20-year, zero-interest mortgage.
