HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Third graders at Hawkins Elementary in Hattiesburg got a meaningful gift Friday morning.
Dictionaries was the gift donated to the students by the Rotary Club of Hattiesburg Sunrise. Toby Barker and other rotary club members handed the dictionaries out to the excited students.
Barker says the donations is actually a national project for third graders that has been in existence for twenty years. Here, the dictionaries are giving to students in the Hattiesburg Public School District.
"Third grade is such a critical juncture in a child development. Kids who aren't reading proficiently by third grade have a much more likelihood of dropping out of school later, which would then have consequences later in life in terms of how much they can learn and how productive they are in society. So, any effort that we can do as a service club to assist in helping kids read and read proficiently, and bettering our community we want to do that," said Barker.
