USM soccer heads to Starkville for Bulldog Classic

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - After Tropical Storm Lee rained out last Sunday's home match with Mississippi State, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles are itching to get back on the field and will do so this weekend in Starkville, Miss., at the Bulldog Classic.

The four-team event will pair the Golden Eagles (2-2-1) up against Lipscomb and Arkansas-Pine Bluff for Friday and Sunday matches, respectively.

Southern Miss will be paced up top by junior striker Jordan Wagner who currently leads the team with four goals scored. In her last outing, a 3-1 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, Wagner netted her first career hat trick.

Across the back, coach Scott Ebke has as solid a group as you'll find in Conference USA as seniors Elisha Tarbell and Amy Davis, junior Caitlin Leumas and freshman Conner McKie have proven to be a formidable group.

In the middle, freshman Mary Margaret Underwood has provided excellent pace and possession since starting the previous three games. Senior Kristen Windecker picked up an assist against SLU and will also provide valuable minutes for Ebke's squad.

Southern Miss will take on a Lipscomb (1-3-1) squad on Friday that has failed to score in their previous two games and are coming off a weekend loss to Chattanooga, 2-1. Lipscomb has scored four goals on the year, with Meghan McGuire leading the way with a pair of strikes. Kirsten Heikkinen and Courtney Williams have netted a goal each. Erin Zerio has played every minute in goal this season, stopping 20 shots while allowing six goals.

On Sunday, the Golden Eagles face Arkansas Pine-Bluff (0-2-0), the preseason pick to win the SWAC Western Division.

Perri Weslosky has netted the Lady Lions' lone goal this season, but Siliva Fuentes was the SWAC's Offensive Player of the Year pick prior to the season and is a threat to score anytime she touches the ball.

This will be the first time Southern Miss has ever faced either team.
