HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - After giving way to redshirt-freshman Cory Acosta for two kicks of 25 and 42 yards respectively, redshirt-senior Danny Hrapann came through with a clutch 49-yarder that gave the golden eagles the lead, and ultimately a win.
Southern Miss (1-0) walked away with a 19-17 win over visiting Louisiana Tech at a soaked field at M.M. Roberts Stadium, even with the offense looking somewhat slower under the harsh conditions.
After making his first field goal attempt with 14 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Hrapmann left the field with cramps, and left the follow-up kickoff duty to Acosta. Hrapmann spent most of the fourth quarter trying to hydrate, allowing Acosta to fill in. The redshirt freshman calmly nailed a 25-yarder with 11:42 remaining in the contest, giving the golden eagles the temporary lead by three.
He later let one sail right through the uprights with 7:44 left, bringing Southern Miss back to within one after the bulldogs (0-1) returned a kickoff 86 yards for a score. Other than the kickoff return, the golden eagles' new-look defense didn't budge a great deal.
They allowed only 244 total yards of offense, and held the bulldogs to only 68 yards on the ground. On the other side of the ball, redshirt senior quarterback Austin Davis completed 21 of 37 passes for 226 yards, while throwing no touchdowns and a pick.
The only touchdown on the night from the black and gold came from "Peanut." With 11:38 left in the first quarter, senior receiver Kelvin Bolden took an end-around 12 yards for a score that put Southern Miss up 7-0 at the time.
