HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - On Wednesday, some members of the Leadership Pine Belt Class of 2011, donated just over two thousand dollars to the Hattiesburg Public School District for educational supplies.
The class, which is a program of the Area Development Partnership, had been working since May to organize a school supply drive and collect monetary donations.
Members of the leadership class collected supplies during a July concert at the city's Town Square Park. Additionally, they reached out to local community members to financially support their efforts to help Hub City students.
Carol Jones, a Pine Belt attorney, is a member of the Leadership Pine Belt class.
According to Jones, "The budget for school supplies is quite minimal so by the time you get to January or February, you have teachers that are buying supplies for their children, for the students out of their own pockets. So there was a need for us to be able to provide. So the monies that we raised will definitely go to the supplies for the kids."
The Leadership Pine Belt class presented the check on Wednesday to a pre-kindergarten class at Hattiesburg's Lillie Burney Elementary School. They also visited with the students.
