HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Mississippi Power hosted an economic development summit Tuesday at the Lake Terrace Convention Center, to educate and encourage business owners to expand their trade to the international market.
More than 95% of the world's consumers are outside of U.S. borders and less than 100 companies in the state export their goods.
Mississippi Power Economic Development Director Arnie Williams said it's not due to a lack of resources, it's because many companies lack experience with the process.
"If we can get our companies to diversify their efforts, get them to diversify their customer base when the economy is volatile, like it is now, our existing industry will have a better opportunity to maintain themselves during these tough economic times."
Representatives from law firms, logistics providers and the Export Import Bank of the United States joined Mississippi Power in providing participants a broad array of real-world advice.
