OVETT, MS (WDAM) - Volunteer firefighters from Ovett, Union, Moselle, Johnson, and Glade responded to a fire Saturday afternoon near Ovett community.
It took two hours for thirty five firefighters to take control of the fire which burned approximately 250 acres. What started out as a controlled field burn by a local resident quickly turned into an out of control woods fire when the flames jumped plowed fire trenches and crossed the Ovett-Petal Road.
Ovett Fire Chief Gordon Pitts served as incident commander and sent out a request for a Forestry crew to respond to the scene with heavy equipment to help contain the fire. Pitts turned the incident over to Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna when he arrived on the scene. No injuries were reported but the scene is still smoking and being monitored closely.
Pitts cautions that residents "be aware that while we're not under a fire ban take precaution when planning controlled burns."
