Bay Springs- 31
Stringer led late in the fourth quarter, but Bay Springs was not to be denied. The bulldogs, 0-10 a year ago, are now 1-0 after their first game under new head coach Ryan Milner. Milner and his team still have another road game next week before returning home to Bay Springs. They'll play Raleigh next week.
West Marion- 14
East Marion- 20
After sixty minutes of play, overtime was needed to decide things, and it was the home Eagles of East Marion who had the last word, and stayed unbeaten at 2-0.
It was a defensive struggle that broke wide open just before half-time. Pinned deep on their own 3-yard line with just under three minute remaining in the half, West Marion junior running back Vonnie Harrel broke through the line and sprinted almost 85 yards down to the East Marion 15 yard line. A few plays later, he finished the job, strolling un-touched into the end zone to put the trojans up 6-0.
Not a moment later did East Marion respond. The Eagles returned the kick-off 80 yards for a score, and took the lead going into half-time.
In the end, the East Marion Eagles sealed the win in overtime to go to 2-0, while the West Marion Trojans fall to 1-1. The Eagles play next at home against Columbia, while the Trojans have a big game at home as well. They'll host Lumberton.
