Laurel investment broker guilty of income tax evasion

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- A former Laurel investment broker who once headed up a Jones County tax watchdog organization has been convicted on federal income tax evasion charges.

A federal court jury in Hattiesburg deliberated about an hour and half Thursday before finding Chip Irby guilty on all six counts of tax evasion, failing to file tax returns, and obstruction of justice. Irby was arrested in Alaska in April after failing to file and pay more than $400,000 in taxes between 1998 and 2001. Prosecutors also say Irby took steps to conceal his income between 2004-2007, all while urging others to stop paying their taxes. Irby faces sentencing before Federal Judge Keith Starrett on November 10th.
