DuPree calls truce week of Hattiesburg vs. Laurel

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - With the battle for the Little Brown Jug looming so near, many might be waiting to hear what wager will be put on the table between Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree and Laurel Mayor Mack.

But for now, and for the first time in a few years, there is no such bet in place. This may come as a surprise to some considering how old the rivalry is, the prestige that surrounds the rivalry, and quite simply these two public officials have enjoyed the friendly rivalry for many years now.

The two have engaged in banter, and have part taken in friendly wages for many years now. Antics have ranged from boxing matches to buying lunches. In fact last year, with the Hattiesburg Tigers claiming victory at home, Mack was forced to dawn a Tigers cap and buy his esteemed opponent lunch in the Hattiesburg High cafeteria.

There is no bet in place as of right now, but that is not to say that couldn't change in the near future. After all, it is understandable why football and football wagers are not high on DuPree's list, considering his candidacy for governor of Mississippi.

All bantering aside, there is still a game to be decided and a Brown Jug to be claimed. The Hattiesburg Tigers took home the jug last season, and it was only one of only three wins for the tigers. This match up will be one of a very good defense versus a very good offense.

Even if DuPree and Mack don't go at it, the Tornadoes and Tigers definitely will, and make no mistake, it's still business as usual with these two.
