Chicken truck loses its chickens in Jones Co.

JONES CO., MS (WDAM)- Tuesday around 9:30 a.m., rescue units from Rustin and Powers Volunteer Fire Departments responded to an accident on Poole Creek Road near Hopson Traylor Road where a Wayne Farms Chicken Transport Truck had lost its load.

According to the driver, he was traveling south on Poole Creek Road when a maroon small pickup truck rounded the curve at the intersection of Hopson Traylor Road straddling the center.

The driver said he hit the shoulder of the road to avoid colliding head-on with the pickup, and the top-heavy trailer tilted over dumping the crates of live chickens. The cab apparently twisted and slid to the opposite side of the road on the passenger side of the cab with the trailer still attached where both trailer and cab hit a small ditch and up-righted itself. The cab and trailer came to a stop sandwiched between two trees in a nearby neighbor's front yard. The driver appeared uninjured but shaken from the incident and refused transportation to the hospital when EmServ arrived on scene.

Wayne Farms employees arrived on scene to catch the scattered chickens and transfer them to another transport truck. Rustin and Powers VFDs remained on scene for over four hours, closing down Poole Creek Road, while recovery operations were completed. The incident is under investigation by the Jones County Sheriff's Department.
