The trial of a former Laurel Investment Banker begins

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The trial of a former Laurel Investment Broker, indicted on federal tax evasion charges began Monday.

Charles W. Irby, also known as Chip, is charged with six counts of tax evasion, failing to file federal tax returns, as well as obstruction of justice.

In April, Irby was arrested in Alaska, after allegedly failing to file and pay more than $400,000 in taxes between 1998 and 2001.

Prosecutors said in their opening remarks Monday, Irby took additional steps to conceal his income from the IRS between 2004 and 2007, all while urging other's to stop paying their taxes.

Irby allegedly helped a number of people generate forms to send to the IRS to keep them from having to pay taxes.

The trial is expected to continue for at least a week.
