Police pursue new leads in Henrico teen's 1991 murder

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – He was just 16, and his brutal murder made headlines back in 1991. Now, police say they've uncovered new evidence that may finally crack the cold case of Marshall Ray Butler.

Marshall Ray Butler would've been 36 this year. But he's forever remembered as a shaggy-haired 16-year-old, who loved his guitar.

Marie Butler-Austin is Marshall's mother.

"I'm hoping that somebody might come forward that might have been afraid when they were a teenager because of how brutally he was killed," she said.

In 1991, Marshall was beaten badly with a blunt object, and stabbed 29 times. His body was discovered in his burning white pickup truck, on the Rte. 360 exit ramp off of I-64 west. His killer has never been found, but police say they've recently found new -unspecified- evidence.

Judy Berger is a detective in the cold case unit.

"Back then, in 1991, there were no motives or really no suspects at that time, or nothing that we could really grasp onto. But with new technology, there's a better way that we can forensically look at fingerprints now," Berger said.

She added, "We have a lot of names that were associated with Marshall back then, and so we're taking a good look at those people."

The developments are believed to be a promising step forward.

When asked if she ever thinks about what she'd say to her son's killer, Marie stops. Tears begin to well up.

"No. No, I don't."

It's something she won't think about, until this cold case is closed.

"And it won't ever, ever fill that hole that I have left in my heart, but it might help another family from not having to go through this," Butler said.

Investigators say they won't give up on Marshall's case, nor any of the more than 80 open cold cases in Henrico County. Anyone with information on the 1991 murder of Marshall Ray Butler is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
