Police find body in Hattiesburg creek

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- Hattiesburg police recovered a body in Gordon's Creek in downtown Hattiesburg around 7:30 Friday evening. Officials say they were directed to the body when a citizen stumbled across it while looking for scrap metal.  The remains were found a quarter of a mile east of Unetta street.

"Due to the level of decomposition we do not know how long the body has been there, but we know it's been there for some time," said Lt. Eric Proulx, HPD Public Information Officer.  "At this time the investigation is being considered just a death investigation not a homicide.  once the autopsy is completed and the crime scene is processed, we will have a better idea of what the cause of death was"

Officials are not disclosing the sex or race at this time.  Police say they routinely receive reports of missing persons, but right now they cannot confirm or deny that the remains are one of those missing persons.
