Hattiesburg surgeon in U.S. Army to return to active duty

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg surgeon at Wesley Medical Center is preparing to embark on his fifth deployment overseas as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army.

Joseph Rubelowsky is both a Cardiovascular Surgeon and committed military man. He joined the Army in the late nineteen eighties and explained that he has formed lifelong friendships with fellow servicemen and women.

During deployments, Rubelowsky works as a general surgeon with a team for the Army treating both U.S. servicemen and civilians in need of his expertise. Rubelowsky said he was inspired by several mentors as a young doctor to pursue both a medical and military career.

According to Rubelowsky, "There were a few surgeons that have trained me during my training that were in the Special Forces and were in Vietnam and made multiple tours in Vietnam and these were the guys that really could operate in the operating room."

Rubelowsky expects to be deployed later this August. He is scheduled to return to Hattiesburg in December. In the meantime, his partner at Wesley's Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Department will care for their Pine Belt area patients.
