Petal artist's work wins Will Rogers Medallion Award

PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Vaughn Wilson is known throughout the Pine Belt for his accomplishments as a photographer and painter. However, this creative Petal native is also an author.

Wilson's book is about a subject matter he cares deeply about, horses. According to Wilson, "I'm told by my parents that the first word I said was horse. And of course I might have been looking at a chicken at the time. But I'm one of those people, I was actually born with a need to be around horses."

Titled, "Tell Me about that Horse: Stories from Exceptional People about Treasured Horses," the publication features interviews with thirty nine well known horse enthusiasts from around the country like music star, Charlie Daniels.

Wilson spent three years conducting interviews, taking photographs and including portraits of each subject he interviewed in the book. Additionally, the book features a forward by baseball great and rancher, Nolan Ryan.

For his efforts, Wilson's book recently received the Will Rogers Medallion Award. That recognition is given annually to a book that embodies the spirit of western literature.

    A Copiah County grand jury has indicted 45-year-old Dr. Michael Holifield on two counts each of sexual battery and gratification of lust, and one count of statutory rape for acts against two girls, ages 15 and 16.
