Roadwork targets busy Hattiesburg intersection

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - One of the Hub City's busiest intersections is going to be even more congested as road work continues by the crossroads of Hardy Street and Westover Drive.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation, or M-DOT, is busy installing new turn lanes in the intersection, as well as widening on and off ramps to Interstate 59. For commuters, this means likely lane closures in the process. M-DOT officials said the completion date for this work is set for June 2012. However, they hope to have the improvements made before then.

Dave Steele, District Engineer for the Westover Drive intersection says, "We'll have daily lane closures, and we are just asking all drivers to be careful and slow down for our safety and for theirs."

Road work is also happening this August in Petal along the Evelyn Gandy Parkway. M-DOT said they are laying down new asphalt in the southbound lane of the road.

Officials explained that this project should be completed by mid-September.
