West Nile death in Jones County prompts residents to take precautions

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The West Nile Virus has hit south Mississippi.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported Monday the first West Nile virus death for 2011 was a Jones County resident. In 2010, Mississippi had eight WNV cases, but no deaths. Three additional WNV cases are reported in Pearl River, Wayne, and Hinds counties.

To prevent WNV infection, drain all pools of standing water, and be sure to apply mosquito repellant when venturing outside.
