Piney Woods School alumni meet in Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - An organization of former students who attended the Piney Woods School near Jackson have met in Hattiesburg for the first time, to step-up efforts to support that school. The Piney Woods School International Alumni Association hosted its annual meeting in the Hub City this weekend.

Members are hoping to get more financial support for the 100-year-old boarding school, which has given thousands of disadvantaged African-American students a Christian education.

The events included a business meeting, a literary luncheon and a prayer breakfast.

"As the years go on, the school has had some financial difficulty and one of the reasons we want to unite stronger and reach out to more alumni, is so that we can provide that support," said Rachel Gallant, president of the Board of Directors of the Piney Woods School International Alumni Association.

"We discussed how we could help more young people get into Piney Woods and help them financially, and also to provide scholarships once they graduate Piney Woods, to assist them in going on to a higher school of learning," said Sidney Lott, a member of the board.

The alumni association was organized in 1976.

The school was founded in 1909.
