CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) - A Camp Shelby-based Army unit which trains other units for overseas deployments has a new commander. Friday morning, Col. Dale Kuehl assumed command of the 177th Armored Brigade in a traditional change of command ceremony at the post.
He takes over for Col. William Prior, who led the unit for 2 years.
The 177th is one of 2 Camp Shelby brigades which have trained thousands of servicemen and women for duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
"I'm very excited about being down here," said Col. Kuehl. "It's a great mission, training America's finest soldiers, the reserve component, a great partnership here, with Camp Shelby," Col. Kuehl said.
"The 177th Armored Brigade, in concert with a lot of agencies here at Camp Shelby, Mississippi and the surrounding area, have done great work over the last couple of years, training reserve component forces for combat, and then taking care of those soldiers when they get back here to the United States," said Col. Prior.
Col. Kuehl is no stranger to Hattiesburg. He and his wife, Ellen, a former Southern Miss student, were engaged in the Hub City.
