Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)- An early morning accident involving three tractor trailers in south Covington County closed the northbound lane OF Highway 49 for more than 4 hours.

The accident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. near the Forrest, Covington County line. A semi pulling a lowboy trailer was pulling onto the highway when the trailer came loose from the tractor. The driver was attempting to reconnect when he was struck by one and then another 18 wheeler. Some diesel fuel was spilled onto the road way. M-Dot crews used sand to soak up the diesel.

Traffic in the Northbound lane was diverted around the accident at Highway 42 and sent to Highway 589.  One driver was apparently injured and was taken to Forrest General Hospital. The extent of the injuries is unknown.

The northbound lane of Highway 49 was reopened shortly after 8:30 a.m.
