The following is a press release from University of Southern Mississippi Athletics -
Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini announced Tuesday that the Golden Eagles will meet BYU in a home-and-home football series which is slated for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
"We have shown over our history that we like to play quality non-conference opponents and, by signing a home-and-home series with BYU, this is another example of that philosophy in our scheduling," Giannini said. "We know our fans will be excited about this series and we look forward to traveling to BYU in 2014 and hosting the Cougars in 2015."
The Cougars, which will become a Division I football Independent this fall, will entertain the Golden Eagles at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah, in 2014.
BYU will then travel to Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium for a 2015 meeting.
The two teams have met previously in football twice, with each team winning a game during the span of the 1975 and 1976 seasons.
The Golden Eagles ended the 1975 campaign with a 42-14 victory over the Cougars in Jackson, while BYU claimed a 63-19 decision the following season in Provo.
Other scheduled non-conference games for the Golden Eagles in 2014 includes a trip to Mississippi State and a home game versus Louisiana Tech, while the in-state Bulldogs come to Hattiesburg in 2015 and Southern Miss travels to Nebraska.
