OAK GROVE, MS (WDAM) - A lightning strike to the roof above the garage is the probable cause of a fire that destroyed a home in the Bent Creek Sub-Division in Oak Grove.
Central Lamar Fire Chief Reggie Ridgeway says the fire quickly spread through the attic and second floor. Firefighters from four Lamar County departments arrived to find the top half completely engulfed in flames. It took them about two hours to get the blaze under control and they were on scene until about 1:30 a.m. Four firefighters received minor injuries fighting the blaze.
Homeowner Diane Martin says she was five minutes away from home when she got the call the house was on fire and no one else was in the home. Family and friends were back out at the house Thursday afternoon helping Martin salvage what they could.
"I'm sure that anyone who has gone through this knows the overwhelming feeling that it brings," said Martin. "But I do want to thank all my neighbors, relatives, friends, and the firemen that worked so diligently to try to save all they could. There's not a lot that could be saved, but I thank them from the bottom of my heart."
Ridgeway said no fire hydrants were located in the area so tankers had to be rotated in to spray the more than 70,000 gallons of water it took to extinguish the fire.
