Mississippi teachers attend science camp at USM

HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM)- Often times it's kids that enjoy summer camp, but this week high school science teachers are getting in on the fun by taking part in a camp designed just for them at Southern Miss.

About twenty Mississippi chemistry and physics teachers are learning more about material science in a camp funded by the Office of Naval Research.

The week long camp pairs teachers with master instructors from an organization that promotes the study of material science.

The instructors are helping Mississippi teachers learn new ways to educate their students about the various properties of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites.

Sherry Herron is the Director of Science and Math Education at Southern Miss. She helped to organize the camp.

According to Herron, "It is absolutely essential for teachers to get rejuvenated. Teaching is a very demanding profession and the summertime provides them with opportunities to learn some new things themselves, to be reminded of what it's like to be a student."

On Friday, these teachers will graduate from the program in a ceremony at Southern Miss.
