Shelter manager explains new surrender donation request policy

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Southern Pines Animal Shelter manager Lara Hudson says the new surrender donation request policy was initiated to help defray the costs of the care of the more than 800 animals brought to the shelter each month.

Hudson says the cost of running the shelter is about $500,000 a year and it is funded mostly by donations. The shelter is a non-profit and only receives about one third of its funding from the government.

"When people surrender animals or they bring in strays, they come in fill out paperwork and we ask them for a surrender fee of $15.00,"said Hudson. "We're not a government facility."

Hudson says that the surrender donation request is not mandatory and the shelter's policy is to take in every single animal regardless of health condition.

The donation request for litters of puppies and kittens is $40.
