FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - More than 90 volunteers are giving up a week of their time to work with special needs children at the Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp in South Forrest County.
The camp is in it's 50th year and provides a variety of recreational activities for children with significant disabilities. Activities include arts and crafts, swimming, boating, fishing and more.
The camp is run by an all volunteer staff. This year there was a waiting list of more than 75 girls and boys who wanted to be camp counselors. Camp Director Terry Daniels says that without the volunteers the camp couldn't go on.
"It humbles me to know that here are so many teenagers willing to give up a week of their time to work hard and they do so willingly," said Daniels. "It's amazing, we couldn't do it without them."
Abbie Rogers is the founder of the camp and she ran it until her death in 2007.
