TAYLORSVILLE, MS (WDAM) - 40-year-old David Eaton is an attorney in Nashville, but he has strong ties to Taylorsville. His father, Mark Haskin Eaton, was born there. He went on to become a staff sergeant in the Army Special Forces and was killed in action in Vietnam in 1971.
That was the same year David Eaton was born.
Eaton never knew his father, but many others who did joined him Thursday night at the Taylorsville Train Depot to name a portion of Highway 531 in Taylorsville in honor of Staff Sergeant Eaton.
Eaton has learned a lot about his father over the years, including how much he liked to hunt and how much he loved horses. And now, David Eaton hopes motorists who pass through Taylorsville will remember his father and other soldiers who gave so much for the country they loved.
"I'd like for them to think about who he may have been and what his service was about," said David Eaton. "I hope that they think of other servicemen and women who've served this country and given sacrifices of their time and lives," Eaton said.
The Staff Sergeant Mark Haskin Eaton Memorial Highway extends from the intersection of Highway 28 to the Smith/Jasper county line.
