HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)-Friday evening, the Hattiesburg police department arrested Raffeal Simmons, 26, of Hattiesburg in connection with the murder of Jerry Minor, 54.

Minor is the second murder victim found just blocks from HPD headquarters. Witnesses say it looked as if he was beaten to death --but investigators have yet to confirm the cause.

Meanwhile police are still investigating a separate murder that took place a block away on Sunday.

"We are still asking the public to give us information in reference to the homicide of the Hispanic individual at the James street apartments." said HPD Major, Hardy Sims.

Librado Garcia was found shot to death inside an apartment Sunday morning. Residents and family members believe it was an attempted robbery.

Sims says, Garcia and Minor bring the city to its fifth murder investigation this year.

"We are doing everything in our power to solve these crimes."

Sims says, the department is increasing the number of units patrolling neighborhood streets. In fact, late Thursday, six men were arrested and charged with possession of crack cocaine. Close to where the two murders took place. However, none of men are murder suspects.

"The crimes that we are experiencing in these neighborhoods, the two homicides are crimes of passion and aggression," Sims said. "We cannot have an officer at every household but when something happens we act on crimes such as these and we have been successful."

Hattiesburg police will continue to search for clues and hope the public will come forward with any helpful information.
