PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Funeral services for Petal Alderman Willie Hinton were held Thursday morning at the Carterville Baptist Church. The 62 year old Hinton died last Friday after suffering a heart attack while driving.
He was alderman for the City of Petal from 1995 to 2005 and from 2009 to present. He was also the owner of Modern Insurance Company.
Petal Mayor Hal Marx says Hinton's contributions to the city over the years were innumerable.
"He was a watchdog over our finances. He wanted to make sure every dollar was accounted for," said Marx. "He also wanted to provide Petal residents good quality of life, a safe community, and as many amenities that we could afford. But he was a real stickler for the budget and that's what we needed before and at this time."
A special election to fill Hinton's vacant seat is set for August 16. The date to qualify is July 27.
Hinton was laid to rest at Forrest Garden Cemetery in Petal.
