JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Jones County isn't doing so bad, when it comes to unemployment rates around the state.
Out of 82 counties in the Magnolia state, Jones County ranks number five in the unemployment rate. This month the rate dropped down to 7.9 percent, last month it was at 8.2 percent.
Jones County Economic Development Authority President, Mitch Stennett said the area has done fairly well despite the economic slump, it has consistently remained below the state and national average.
Stennett said, "When you start looking at the states 82 counties and where we are in association with the rest of them, we fair very well. We have weathered the recession very well. As a matter of a fact, we have several public building projects going on. The DHS building, Justice Court building and a nursing home the hospital is putting in. So, our construction employment is significantly up and that helps our unemployment rate."
Lamar County was the only other area in the Pine Belt to rank significantly low on the list.
