Man shot dead near Hattiesburg police department, adds to murder list

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Police are still gathering information on a Sunday-morning James Street murder.

Police are releasing few details, but Librado Garcia Mendoza, 29, was found shot to death only 200 yards from the Hattiesburg Police Department. Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict said he died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

The 911 call came into dispatch at 12:41 a.m. The first officer arrived on the scene at 12:44 a.m.

The murder becomes the fifth unsolved homicide in the Pine Belt in six weeks.

Robert and Patsy Morrison, both 82, were found bludgeoned to death in their Lamar County Home on May 24. Henry Charles Adcock, 65, was found shot to death in his home in Jones County on June 23. An unidentified 50-year-old man was found shot in the head and dead on railroad tracks near Bouie Street in Hattiesburg in early June.
