Cory Maye pleads guilty to manslaughter

JACKSON, MS (AP) - A Jeff Davis County man once sentenced to death for killing a police officer has now pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Cory Maye pleaded today in Jackson and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

He will be released soon because he has already served more than 9 years behind bars.

Maye shot and killed Prentiss police officer Ron Jones during a 2001 raid on his home.

Maye maintained he thought police were intruders when they kicked in his door. He said he was just protecting his daughter.

Last year, the Mississippi Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Maye after his capital murder conviction was thrown out.
