HATTUESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service is traveling the state holding Americorp and Volunteer seminars.
Thursday they were at the Trent Lott Center to talk about the different volunteer and community service programs and the availability of federal grant money to help support them. Educational institutions, volunteer centers, government agencies, and non profit and faith based organizations are eligible to apply for the grants.
David Mallery, Executive Director for the Volunteer Commission says volunteerism and service programs fill the gap for community needs in tough economic times.
"Community service and volunteerism and the work the commission does in supporting that is a critical part of making sure that no matter how bad the times get there is some resource to support this to make sure the needs are met," said Mallery.
Five more of these programs will be held around the state in the next two weeks.
