HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - The longtime director of the Children's Center for Communication and Development at Southern Miss, Margaret Brinegar, is retiring after thirty two years.
Brinegar first came to the Children's Center as a speech language pathologist in 1979. At that time, she said the center was educating and treating about twenty five children.
Over the years, the facility has grown to a current enrollment of ninety students with a variety of professionals on staff to help those kids overcome their developmental challenges.
That evolution of services is something Brinegar is particularly proud of. For the last thirteen years, she has also been the center's director, helping to oversee some extensive renovations to their building on the Southern Miss campus.
"I feel like I know that the Children's Center is a life changing place, there is no doubt about that. It changes the lives of the young students that we serve. It changes the lives of the whole family unit. And it's a powerful place because it's full of hope," said Brinegar.
Margaret Brinegar's last day at the Children's Center is Thursday, June 30th. Afterwards, she is looking forward to embarking on some new and exciting adventures.
