Copper thieves strike New Augusta cell tower

NEW AUGUSTA, MS (WDAM) - Perry County authorities are searching for the suspects who stole up to two dozen feet of copper wire from a cell phone tower Tuesday night.

Perry County Sheriff's Department officials say an unknown number of people cut through a chain link fence at a site just northeast of New Augusta and removed the wire. They said thieves typically cut it into foot-long lenghths to be sold to scrap yards. Authorities are hoping you can help catch the culprits.

"People should be on the lookout for possibly a vehicle such as a small pick-up truck, even a car that may be parked in the driveway of a cell phone tower," said Perry County Sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith. "We do not have any make or model at this time. We also don't know how many suspects are involved in this case," Smith said.

If you have any information about the theft, call the Perry County Sheriff's Dept. at (601) 964-8461 or Crimestoppers at (601) 964-STOP.
