HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Many Hattiesburg residents are remembering a day that signifies the end of slavery.
It's called Juneteenth and the annual celebration began with a parade that left the historic Hattiesburg Train Depot for Vernon Dahmer Park.
Once there, folks gathered for food and other activities including a softball tournament. Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865, when slaves in south Texas learned of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
This was Hattiesburg's 27th Juneteenth celebration.
