Family and friends remember Hattiesburg murder victim

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - More than 60 family and friends turned our for a short memorial service for 50 year old Melvin Buckhelter, the Hattiesburg man found dead last Friday by the railroad tracks on Mobile Street.

Buckhelter's body discovered near the corner of Mobile and East 2nd Street early Friday morning by a passerby. An autopsy in Jackson showed that Buckhelter had died of a gunshot wound and Hattiesburg Police are investigating the shooting as a homicide.

During the service flowers and signs were placed at the site where his body was found and prayers were said. Many in attendance spoke about the great man Buckhelter was.

The funeral is Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Morning Star Baptist Church in Hattiesburg.

    The new Miss Hospitality has been crowned in Hattiesburg.  She is Emma Grace McGrew, 18, of Booneville.
