U.S. Army turns 236-years-old

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The U.S. Army is celebrating its 236th birthday.

Soldiers, future soldiers and the public attended a celebration for the Army's birthday Friday morning at the African American Military Museum in Hattiesburg.

The special occasion was organized by the Hattiesburg Cruding Company. During the event the history of the U.S. Army was read, the history of the African American Military Museum and Assistant Mayor John Brown gave the invocation.

Captain Antinita Graham says she hopes the army's birthday receives more recognition in the future.

"Absolutely, every year we hope that it gets bigger and bigger, because we recognize that it's not just the army's birthday its America's birthday. The army belongs to America. It just doesn't belong to the soldiers that serve in the army," said Graham.

During the event, 35 future soldier were given a swear in ceremony.
