JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi's fifth annual back-to-school sales tax holiday starts on Friday at 12:01 a.m. and ends Saturday at midnight. For retailers, it is one of their busiest times of the year for merchants and shoppers can save 7 percent on certain school supplies, clothes and shoes for the coming academic year.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department of Education is seeking $1 million in the coming fiscal year to conduct cheating investigations. Department spokesman Pete Smith says the agency has no funds set aside for such investigations and had to borrow money from other areas for a recent probe in the Clarksdale district.

RIPLEY, Miss. (AP) - A family-owned long-haul trucking company - Barefoot Carriers - is expanding its operations in Ripley, Mississippi. Officials say a $2 million corporate investment will add new trucks and trailers as well as a parking and lay-down area in Ripley. At least 25 jobs will be created.

BROOKHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - A Georgia man has died after falling from a water tower in Brookhaven, Mississippi, where he was working. Authorities say the man's company has a contract to repaint the Brookhaven and that 41-year-old John T. Johnson plunged 90-feet from scaffolding on Wednesday.
