HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - The former University Mall shopping plaza in Hattiesburg has been renamed as of Tuesday. The center is now the Midtown Market.
Robert St. John and two of his partners have owned the Market since March of 2010 and they have worked to improve the area by re paving it and working towards 100 percent occupancy. That goal has since been achieved.
Additionally, Midtown Market has been focused on attracting and promoting local businesses like the newly opened Tabella restaurant and anchor store, BCH and Company.
St. John explained, "University Mall was built here in 1970 and at the time, it was on the edge of town. And now we are kind of in the heart of Hattiesburg in Midtown. And as we were giving the place a facelift and re-concepting it with a push towards local retail, then we wanted to change the name to be a part of this area that we call Midtown."
St. John said he has been invested in seeing the center become more business and consumer friendly because he has worked in the region since 1987 when another one of his restaurants, the Purple Parrot Café opened.
