HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Two hundred and forty young women are in the Pine Belt this week participating in Magnolia Girls State.

The program is sponsored by the American Legion and it's designed for high achieving young women about to enter their senior year of high school.

Girls State gives young women an opportunity to learn about the political process first hand by grouping the ladies into several municipalities within a fictional state.

During the week of activities, the ladies can run for state office and receive important information about Mississippi's political workings through presentations by state officials and accomplished business women.

Stephanie Yarber is a Girls State delegate from Petal. "Well I've enjoyed making a lot of new friends, it's been a lot of fun bonding with the people in my city and just getting to know them."

On Monday, the ladies heard from a variety of speakers including Attorney General Jim Hood and Theresa Banks, the President of the American Business Women's Association.
