Girl's State begins at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - As  the delegates from Boy's State started heading home, more than 240 young ladies from around the state began to arrive on campus for the 64th Session of Girl's State.

As with the boys, the girl delegates will also learn about the legislative process and political proceedings.

The delegates are chosen by their school counselors and the American Legion Auxiliary based on how well they perform in school, their citizenship, attitudes, and community service.

"We take the top of the crop," said Nancy Sanders, Girl's State Director. "We bring them in and they spend a week with us and during this time they learn so much about our government and how it is run."

Featured speaker Sunday is Senate President Pro-Temp and Lieutenant Governor Candidate Billy Hewes.
