Two Forrest County men arrested for stealing copper from cell tower

FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Two Forrest County brothers were arrested early Tuesday morning and were charged with stealing copper from a cell tower.

Sheriff Billy McGee says a deputy was performing a routine check of a cell tower in the south end of the county around 3:30 a.m. when he spotted brothers Jeffrey and Jamie Housewright attempting to steal the copper.

McGee says investigators believe based on items they found inside the brothers vehicle they may be responsible for copper theft at several other towers in the Pine Belt. He added that copper theft has been an increasing problem.

"It's just with the cost of all metals at this time going up and up and up, it's just another way for the criminals to make money," said McGee. "The tighter the economy gets, the more theft we have of copper and other metal products."

McGee says there are requirements and regulations that metal dealers in the state must follow when buying scrap metal.
