Retired General Jeff Hammond speaks at Memorial Day Service

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Retired Major General Jeff Hammond spoke to the congregation of the Grace Temple Baptist Church During a special Memorial Day Service Sunday.

Hammond commanded the 4th Infantry Division in Iraq and following his long military career took a position as Senior Associate Athletic Director at USM.

Hammond's message to the congregation was the importance of taking time to remember those who have given their lives protecting their country.

"Young men and women, old men and women died so that we can have the freedoms that we have here," said Hammond. " I just thin it's important to take a moment to pause spiritually, emotionally, put our arms around each other and reflect on those that went before us."

Hammond's military career spanned 32 years.
